This simple bench utilizes a few pieces of affordable lumber to create a strong and steady surface.

(1) 1 x 4 x 8
(3) 2 x 4 x 8
(1) 4 x 4 x 8
1.5 ” screws
(stain, or paint) polyurethane
How to Build a Bench for Under $30
Cut the 4×4 into four equal pieces (18″) Connect these by two pieces of 2×4 (14″) see photograph
Use the level while connecting the pieces. As John Prine said, “He used to level on the level”
Cut four pieces of 2×4 into four foot lengths. Lay them over the leg and supports at both ends to make sure everything lines up. Apply the level to the four foot pieces to make sure both ends are the same.
Once they are evenly spaced, connect the 2×4 pieces at both ends with a 4″ screw
Measure and cut 1×4 pieces and attach to the sides and ends. (ed note: measure twice, cut once)
My grandfather calls it lipstick. The things you add to woodworking so nobody recognizes the mistakes. In this case, you can paint it, add a nice stain (my favorite) and polyurethane it and protect it from the elements.
I built one for my mother that has my son’s handprints all over it. It remains a treasured keepsake that she enjoys to this day. I gave one to a mandolin player of mine who used it as a piano bench. If you need to custom fit your bench into a smaller space, cut the long 2 x 4 pieces shorter than 4 feet.
