There is a time to rest and a time to twirl.
Get your sleep now greenhorn, because once Wanee Festival 2018 descends upon the oak forest of the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park on April 19-23, there will only be time for most serious brand of getting it done. Abandon sweat all ye who enter here. This time it’s going to get fireeeeeeeeeee. Merry Wanee 2018!
Tucked just north of Live Oak, Florida on the banks of the Suwannee River, the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park is one of the finest concert/camping destinations in the Orion Cluster. Find your way to the Mushroom Stage for some of the best music with the finest folks anywhere. It just gets a little silly. Nothing to be afraid of. The sky is not falling, Chicken Little.
This is where music lives.
Thus reads the sign at the entrance to the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park and those people aren’t kidding.
This year’s Wanee lineup includes the likes of WideSpread Panic, Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band, As the Crow Flies, Dark Star Orchestra, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, North Mississippi Allstars, Karl Denson’s The Universe Presents, Eat a Bunch of Peaches, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Walter Trout, Sonny Landreth, The Marcus King Band, George Porter Jr. and Runnin’ Pardners, Pink Talking Fish (Tied To the Whipping Post), Soul Rebels, Les Bros, Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio, The Main Squeeze, Big Something, New Orleans Suspects, Berry Oakley’s Indigenous Suspects, Midnight North, The Yeti Trio, Crazy Fingers, and more. But don’t worry…you won’t need any more.
Wanee First-Time Reminders:
- No Money, No Problem: After you’ve found the park and fandangled a bracelet, for all intensive purposes, you may well be done using hard currency. Make friends with your neighbors and they will likely feed you some of their ditch chicken. Maybe they’ll share breakfast cocktails like the Mimosa Sisters or morning espresso shots like Moose and Smitty. Same with cocktails and contraband. Quit buying so many toys. Don’t worry bro. We got you.
- Stay Warm and Dry: The weather at Wanee tends to be on the greatest of all time list, but north Florida weather can be a little unpredictable in April. Scattered showers can be expected along with scant amounts of frivolous silliness. If you’re glamping, expect any inclement weather to turn your pleasure palace into a frothy torrent of glitter and sparkled feathers. This is not the professional camping stylings of Colorado or Washington. This is Florida and our ground score tents blow over like wet paper towels.
- Pacing Is Key: This isn’t a sprint but a marathon. Let the party come to you. Don’t turn into a Digz-King puddle on Thursday night just because you’re as happy as a lark to see your lost homies. It’s a long way to Sunday and Dark Star Orchestra is playing Thursday, so take your time. As everyone gets to Live Oak and gets settled, the call “Merry Wanee” can be heard throughout the forest and fields. Be wary of neighbors that sleep on top of their vans. Gravity has its cost. Be wary.

Chris Robinson has songs he wants to sing. As frontman for The Black Crowes—one of the most prolific and celebrated rock ’n’ roll bands of its generation—he co-wrote classics like “Jealous Again,”“Remedy,”“She Talks To Angels,”“Twice As Hard”and“Sometimes Salvation.” With a desire to breathe new life into this storied repertoire, Robinson has gathered five musicians whose musical journeys intertwine with his own, including guitarists Marcus King and Audley Freed, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Andy Hess and drummer Tony Leone. Appropriately calling the band, As The Crow Flies, they’ll perform music from throughout Robinson’s history at a handful of select U.S. dates in Spring 2018, including #Wanee, between tours with his primary outfit, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood.
Check out last year’s prepost, The 9 Reasons You Need To Go To Wanee 2017 ,the Wanee Festival 2017 Pregame-Postgame Checklist and the subsequent, Florida Escape Plan. Be forewarned, dear reader, these words and this place is for the light of heart. In an ocean of “fake news”, you’ve found the gyre. nailtravels prides itself on reporting absolute gibberish, but you can be sure most of the silliness gathered from Live Oak is 100 percent foolish, fun and funky.
Best possible practices involve getting there as early as possible. There will be a party growing on the grounds since the Sunday prior to the event, at least. There just may be scattered groups of Bedouin traders remaining hidden, or not so much, in the forest since Spring Reunion. Find them as soon as possible. They will know where to find wild game and fresh water sources.
Follow the nailtravels team as we grab up Thatcher Owen Mullins and the gitfiddles and head to the inaugural Everglades Roots Festival. Searching to find the Camp Happiness likes of Darth Walthall, Eazy Ed, and Sunshine.
Everybody needs a little sunshine in their life. namaste yo.
Thanks for showing up.
